The general pregnancy answer
ADA considers dental radiographs safe throughout pregnancy.

Why a particular examination still needs a purpose
ADA guidance bases imaging on clinical examination and individual information needs, with benefits and exposure considered. It calls for considering prior radiographs and using CBCT only when lower-exposure options cannot supply needed diagnostic information.

A completed reading: Taylor's proposed record
Fictional example: Taylor is pregnant and is considering orthodontics. The team has said a record might be proposed. Taylor has older dental records at another practice. No examination has been selected in this example.
There is no contradiction to solve by choosing an automatic yes or no. General guidance answers the pregnancy question. The proposed-record conversation must explain the information needed for Taylor's own assessment.
Taylor's completed reading is: I understand the general radiograph answer. I also have prior records that may be relevant. I still need to understand what information is missing, what the proposed examination would contribute and which alternatives have been considered.
Prior records are an input to that explanation. Their existence alone does not tell Taylor whether another image is needed. Equally, the availability of an imaging device does not explain why it would help this assessment. The useful result is understanding the purpose still to be explained, rather than selecting a test from a guide.
Keep the record's name connected with its purpose
A conversation can use broad words such as scan or record before it is clear what information is being discussed. Ask for the proposed record to be named and its contribution explained in ordinary words. Keep that explanation alongside what has already been learned from the examination and available records.
For a fuller lesson on two-dimensional radiographs, three-dimensional CBCT and their different information roles, use the existing imaging guide. It provides the wider modality context; this pregnancy lesson keeps the general guidance and personal proposal connected.
